Memorial Art Gallery attendees comments about SoLux Lighting (3500K Daylight , 12 footcandles)

7/24/98 "I think the lighting is very nice. It really draws your attention to the sculptures."

7/25/98 "Lighting is especially good for Impressionist paintings."

7/26/98 "Makes the color and the scenes come alive - do this throughout the whole gallery"

7/26/98 "A wonderful innovation! Do it everywhere!"

7/28/98 "The lighting around the outside is good. There is too much on the sculpture in the middle"

7/28/98 "The difference is perceived more as a comfortable feeling than as a difference in color. I found I took more interest in some pictures than before. Maybe now the artist's color appear more true-to plan?"

7/28/98 "I like the lighting - the paintings seem to glow."

7/28/98 "New lighting lends clarity, depth to the works displayed especially the Impressionists. Additionally, colors seem "truer" somehow & more real (as if the paintings had been cleaned) Very fine, enhances viewing-"

7/28/98 "The difference is very noticeable. The colors are more vivid and the pictures are more vivid. They almost glow"

7/28/98 "You can tell immediately the difference. I think this illumination helps appreciate (and does better justice) to the works."

7/28/98 "This lighting is wonderful - I would hope to see it throughout all galleries in the future. It's almost like seeing paintings for the first time."

7/28/98 "Wonderful! Brings out colors and a 3-dimensional effect not seen in other areas."

7/28/98 "What an improvement! The colors are much more vibrant - particularly the ones which depict a sunlit scene. However, the lights themselves are much more noticeable, like sunlight off a mirror."

7/29/98 "This lighting is great! I can see subtleties in the colors that I didn't know were there. Each painting looks clean and fresh. You can also see the nice highlights on the sculptures."

7/29/98 "Heightened awareness of color & detail - more alive! -vibrant please continue- Made viewer feel "a part of" the painting."

7/29/98 "The colors are much brighter & clearer. The lighting here makes the paintings alive & almost "newer""

7/30/98 "I like these lights because they are bright and dark."

7/30/98 "Great lighting - colors so vivid! Must be hard to decide on a background color - like the dark with most of the works."

7/30/98 "Light is too cold. The pale yellow looks like it is festering like something out of a Dortyeski novel. But the green is most pleasant."

7/30/98 "All the landscapes are improved. The color of sunlight is finally accurately depicted in the paintings. The improvement in the green paints is especially noticeable."

7/31/98 "Seems to bring out color in pictures. Even detail in sculptures is more promenent. Glare on pictures in other rooms so evident. No problem - super job here.

7/31/98 "It's generally fine - wonderful, in fact. But the shadow lines across the tops - especially the Monet & Renoir - seem more prominent and bothersome. Is this a problem that can be fixed?

7/31/98 "I don't see anything special about this lighting. I think the Renoir was actually a canvas that he planned to re-paint or reuse. I've often done this myself. I hope you got it for free or at cost."

8/1/98 "The conventional reduced lighting in galleries is too warm - if the intensity of this light is no greater than the usual, I could say it is most effective in accenting the true colors."

8/1/98 "The lighting enhances the colors and adds a brightness and sharpness to the hues. I also feel the background color of the walls is an important factor. The lighting is a definite improvement"

8/2/98 "This is the way to go. It seems very natural to me, as if viewing the work outdoors. Your statement about clarity and detail apparently is true. Seeing is believing. Thanks for the innovation."

8/2/98 "It's like walking into daylight! Great improvement - much more clarity. Hope you can use this lighting throughout the gallery."

8/2/98 "A cleaner richer light enhancing the viewing experience."

8/2/98 "This room has a warm cozy feeling as I sit and let the pictures touch me. Always nice to come back to."

8/2/98 "I think the lighting is fine, however, there should be a seat closer to the piano so I could play."

8/2/98 "When I first walked into the room I noticed how vivid and bright the pastels appear in the Impressionist paintings however, I credited it to contrast of the dark wall, however as I sit here looking at the earlier 19th Century paintings, they too, despite their darker colors and tones seem more vivid."

8/5/98 "The lighting enhances the collection - How Wonderful!

8/5/98 "The lighting in this gallery is incomparable. Better than any gallery I have ever seen. I'd be interested in knowing the wavelengths of the light bulbs."

8/6/98 "The works sparkle. They look as if the have been recently cleaned. How crisp & clear & sharp (and how successful, the lighting "clarifies" the impressionist works."

8/6/98 "Fantastic! There is no glare. Details are visible across the room. Use more of this light elsewhere."

8/6/98 "Much nicer to view paintings by. They come out much better - easier to see.

8/8/98 "Wonderful clarity! The colors are bright and very easily seen - all the colors. Thank You"

8/8/98 "I really like the effect. Warm & intimate & highlights the paintings and frames which are often washed out on white. The skies & clouds are vibrant. I work in an interactive science museum & we have to introduce small bits of color & would love to experiment more."

8/12/98 I've visited all the museum/gallery spaces in Rochester and have to say this is the most well lit. My feeling about the color temperature is that it might be a bit cool for my tastes. I've also visited MOMA, the Metropolitan, National Gallery of Art in D.C. and Hirshorn and this gallery seems brighter in comparison."

8/14/98 "The lighting is very crisp & invigorating - I enjoy being in this lighting. Easier and more stimulating to pay attention to the newly lit detail of the art. Yes… I like it, I do."

8/14/98 "The lighting seems almost like daylight which makes it easier to view the art in a seemingly natural environment. I like it a lot."

8/14/98 "The perception is of a much higher level of lighting. It is less stressful to the viewer, who is often staining to see details at traditional museum lighting levels. All in all, a very sucessful experiment and one that warrants expansion."

8/14/98 "Fantastic. The room feels alive. I feel so good in this room when I come in here. You can see things clear looking at the painting. With the washer women they look like they are walking out of the painting. It is so pretty in here. Good job. Do the whole gallery."
